Background of the study:
Traditional rulers in Ikot Abasi have historically served as custodians of cultural heritage and community governance. Their roles encompassed conflict resolution, cultural preservation, and social regulation (Obi, 2023). However, with the advent of modern governance systems and rapid socio-political changes, the influence and roles of traditional rulers have undergone significant transformation. Contemporary governance models now emphasize formal institutional structures, legal frameworks, and democratic participation, thereby challenging the traditional authority of these rulers (Ibe, 2024). Many communities now witness a blend of customary and modern practices, where traditional rulers serve more as cultural figureheads than as active political leaders. This study explores the evolving roles of traditional rulers, investigating how they negotiate power, maintain cultural legitimacy, and contribute to contemporary governance while adapting to modern administrative demands (Olu, 2025). By critically assessing these changes, the research aims to shed light on the dynamics between tradition and modernity, and the implications for community identity and governance efficacy (Akin, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
The diminishing political power and evolving roles of traditional rulers in Ikot Abasi have raised concerns about the erosion of customary governance structures. As modern institutions increasingly dominate the governance landscape, traditional rulers struggle to maintain their relevance and authority. This study addresses the gap in understanding how these changes affect community governance and cultural continuity, seeking to identify the challenges and opportunities inherent in this transformation (Ekwueme, 2023).
